Located in the heart of Porto, Cafe Gabero offers an inviting fusion of traditional Portuguese café charm and the vibrant spirit of a Belgian beer bar. This cozy spot on R. de Dom Joao IV is more than just a typical café—it’s a culinary sanctuary where locals and travelers alike discover comfort through soul-satisfying food and a carefully curated selection of craft beers.
The star of the menu here is undoubtedly the Francesinha, a beloved Porto specialty elevated to new heights at Cafe Gabero. Whether you opt for a single Francesinha À Gabero (€14.60), the indulgent two or three portions combo, you’re in for layers of tender veal smothered in melted cheese, crowned with a perfectly fried egg and served alongside crispy golden fries. Each bite delivers a harmonious balance of rich, savory flavors—meaty, cheesy, and with just the right hint of spice from the signature sauce that envelops the dish. It’s no wonder Diego Llanos declares it “the best Francesinha I've ever tried.”
Adding to the experience is the impressive range of Belgian beers available, such as the classic Kwak and the cherished Cerveja da Bélgica Kuac. These drinks complement the food beautifully, offering crisp, refreshing notes that cleanse the palate between each decadent mouthful. Fernando Casanova’s surprise at finding such a beer selection “in a small tasca” speaks volumes about the unique character of this café.
Beyond the Francesinha, Cafe Gabero teammates embrace diversity in their specials, such as the Feijoada Brasileira, a hearty Brazilian stew of black beans and pork served with white rice, farofa, and a tangy vinagrete. It’s a dish bursting with tradition and warmth, perfect for sharing stories over a glass of Sumol or Compal juices. The menu also offers a variety of refreshing sumos, like Sumol Laranja and Compal Tutti Frutti, providing a delightful fruit-forward contrast to the savory plates.
What truly sets Cafe Gabero apart is its welcoming vibe, shaped by both its distinct decor—a cozy blend of Belgian beer bar authenticity and classic Portuguese café—and the genuine kindness of its staff. Guests like Paulo Sousa appreciate the simple, pleasant atmosphere and the passion underlying each meal and beverage served. Tracy highlights Daniel’s attentive and friendly service, alongside generous portions and diverse menu choices that cater to all appetites.
Whether you’re popping in for a hearty breakfast, indulging in a comforting dinner, or simply savoring a refreshing beer with friends, Cafe Gabero promises an authentic Porto experience that’s rich in flavor and full of heart. This hidden gem invites you to slow down, savor every bite, and enjoy the friendly buzz of one of Porto’s most charming neighborhoods.

Who would ever thought that in a small “tasca” we could find such a selection of Belgian beers. The food is tasty and we were served by the kindest people I met in Porto. That’s definitely a hidden gem.
I discover this place two years ago and every time I come to Oporto I can't leave without visiting it. People are very simple and pleasant. They have a lot of craft beers that can be enjoyed with their tasteful food. The decoration is mix between a Belgium beer bar and a Portuguese café. I simply love this place. You won't regret.
I've been in Porto many times and this is the best Francesinha I've ever tried.
Really friendly service! We always went there to have breakfast while staying in the guesthouse nearby. :) Good prices and the pastries are delicious
We came across the cafe by accident and were drawn in by the Belgium beer (more drinks available). Daniel was very attentive and friendly. The food was fantastic from a soup for a small appitite to a francesinha. My friend had streak and she said it was very tasty. Good portions and lots of praise from the table.
Our great little local spot for a morning coffee and treat. The guys working here were always super friendly. Very affordable. Will have to go back to try the francesinha.
One of the best places I have had the pleasure of eating. Great food and the best staff you could ask for
